Andrey Arshavin, the former Zenit St. Petersburg star and UEFA Cup winner, has shared his thoughts on Matvey Safonov’s displays in the Champions League knockout stages. The Russian goalkeeper currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain and has been a key figure in their European campaign.
According to Arshavin, Safonov has looked convincing between the posts in PSG’s knockout matches. “PSG have long been a European giant. They’ve won the Champions League, are now in the final, and were in the Club World Cup final,” said Arshavin. “They clearly boast one of the strongest squads. As for Matvey Safonov, he is in perfect form — he was, he is, and he will likely remain so.”
PSG advanced to the Champions League final after overcoming Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. Safonov started all eight knockout matches, keeping clean sheets in three of them. The Parisian side secured a 1-1 draw in the second leg at the Allianz Arena, which was enough to progress on aggregate. The first-leg result had given them a crucial advantage.
The performance marked another milestone for the Russian shot-stopper, who continues to cement his reputation at the highest level of European club football.
