On May 11, Beijing time, the CBA officially announced that during the Shanxi home game against Guangsha, spectators repeatedly chanted “biased refereeing” and insulted the referees on multiple occasions.
The CBA imposed a fine of 50,000 yuan on the Shanxi Fenjiu Club, deducting it from the club’s league funds, and recorded 3 disciplinary points.
This marks the fifth fine the Shanxi men’s basketball team has received within a single month, along with a previous warning letter. It is an unprecedented situation in CBA history—never before has a single club been fined five times and issued a warning letter in such a short period.
What were the specific incidents? Were there any cases where the CBA issued incorrect fines?
On April 10, during Shanxi’s home game against Shenzhen, spectators shouted “biased refereeing” and insulted the on-court referees. The CBA fined the club 20,000 yuan and recorded 2 disciplinary points.
On April 19, during Shanxi’s away game against Jiangsu, head coach Pan Jiang questioned and criticized the referees’ decisions. After being ejected and during his departure, he continued to verbally abuse the referees. He received a total suspension of three games and a fine of 60,000 yuan.
On April 29, after Shanxi’s away game against Qingdao, assistant coach Vytautas Buzas made comments criticizing the referees (saying it was “5 against 8”) during an official interview. The CBA fined him 30,000 yuan, and club official Wang Jianwu was fined 10,000 yuan.
On May 2, during the Shanxi vs. Qingdao game, security risks were discovered at the Taiyuan venue. The Taiyuan venue and Shanxi Fenjiu Club received a written warning, requiring strict adherence to league regulations to ensure safety and order.
On May 8, during Shanxi’s away game against Guangsha, player Jiao Hailong used inappropriate language toward spectators. He was fined 30,000 yuan, and head coach Pan Jiang, as the responsible person, was fined 10,000 yuan.
On May 11, during Shanxi’s home game against Guangsha, spectators again repeatedly chanted “biased refereeing” and insulted referees. The CBA imposed a fine of 50,000 yuan and recorded 3 disciplinary points.
According to the official explanations, the fines were mainly due to excessive statements by coaches and players, failure to comply with referee management, and widespread spectator misconduct.
The CBA’s fines are well-founded, but issuing so many penalties to a single club in such a short time harms the league’s brand image. It raises questions about whether the Shanxi club is showing resistance, as coaches, players, and fans all appear to be repeat offenders despite repeated warnings.
