Sitting fourth in the standings, Gummersbach now trails SG Flensburg-Handewitt, who occupy the guaranteed Champions League second-place spot, by just two points.
Even without national player Julian Köster, who is sidelined with a meniscus injury, VfL secured their eleventh consecutive win with relative ease. Meanwhile, Leipzig remains at the bottom of the table after eight matches without a victory. Ludvig Hallbäck was the top scorer of the match, netting eight goals for Gummersbach.
